I finally ordered The Ice Storm by Rick Moody, it’ll be here by Saturday afternoon.
It’s playing on the Criterion Channel in January, so I wanted to read the source material before I watch the movie for the first time.
My plans for lobster bisque and garlic bread went out the window when I saw the market no longer had it in stock. I considered tinned fish, something like smoked mussels on corn chips, but then I decided chicken tenders and fries instead since it’s so cold out. The cold front off the Atlantic made everything here frosty, 43 degrees.I got out my black merino wool sweater from the closet.
I’ve been listening to “Porpoise Song” by The Monkees on repeat for some reason ever since I caught it at the end of a Mad Men episode the other night. I’ve been trying to drown out the alternative Christian music my roommates play while I bury my head in Slouching Towards Bethlehem.
George Harrison has also been on shuffle since I watched Weapons (finally); what a movie! Of course, I always love having George Harrison on my playlist because he was Bob Dylan’s best friend.
Julie Garner was amazing in that, but Amy Madigan (channeling a bit of Ruth Gordon in Rosemary’s Baby) was incendiary and so frightful. There were some camera shots that gave me so much dread but I couldn’t look away, which I found phenomenal. Only David Lynch has done that for me.
I can’t wait to get back to Illinois and my own little space. I dream about living in my sister’s old room again, like I did when I ran the literary magazines, especially since my room’s stuff is all in storage.
I’ll still probably eat the garlic bread even without the soup. I just miss New Year’s Eves when I’d make my parents a whole feast (Oysters Rockefeller, Clams Casino, Cheese and Charcuterie Boards) while we’d settle in with Tattinger and Casino Royale.
The only thing constant is change.
